That's interesting. Disables new logons only, cool. Better than the old
"Disable login" available on the Citrix console, as that stops disconnected
users getting on also.

How many TS/RDS servers do you have?

I'm in the habit of kicking everyone off, disabling the connection, and
manually changing to install mode. When I'm finished with whatever it is I'm
doing, including updates and patches for software from any vendor, I reboot
then back out the config changes.

Windows updates are TS/RDS aware. Best Practice is NO users, except the admin
doing the install, should be logged in OR have ANY sessions (connected or
disconnected) on the server having software or updates installed.

Why? /install monitor file system and registry activity to see what needs to
be placed in either All Users or in the shadow registry keys. If users are
logged in (connected with a session ID) and are running software, then the
/Install process is monitoring THEIR activity along with what the admin is
installing. Bad news. Bad boy. Don't do that or I will send you to the
corner with no beer for a month!

Ta, The problem is, I am just in the throws of installing IBM client access
V7R1 and I installed the MS products (.net framework and C++ 2005
redistributable) without changing the mode.(basically assuming if it is a
MSproduct it should know about TS/RDS)
I then installed the IBM product (I use the control panel/programs/install
application on desktop process) and it just never finishes (the windows
installer co-ordinator never completes) and a few errors in the event log
Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files (x86)\IBM\Client
Access\cwbunnav.exe". Dependent Assembly
Microsoft.VC80.MFC,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="8.0.50727.4053"
could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis

Uninstalling the MS products and reinstalling them has made the errors go
away, but will the co-ordinator wont complete (we are talking waiting an hour
or so before cancelling the install)

The thing is , the .net product will get its updates via auto update (as may
the C++ product) and will windows update install the updates TS/RDS aware???
who knows....

If software installers are built to Microsoft programming standards, the
installer should detect it is running on a TS/RDS server and automatically
switch in and out of install mode (not admin mode). I still prefer to manually
do a "change user /install" and then "change user /execute" for most
non-Microsoft software. Adobe products (Flash and Reader specifically) do not
follow the guidelines.

Should every single bit of software be installed in "admin mode". by this I
mean things like .net framework and C++ 2008 redistributable.
Or to put it another way , are there any that should not be?
