That sounds like the old Scalable Networking Pack bug, introduced in Windows 2003 SP2.
Have you been selectively applying Windows Updates? The Scalable Networking Pack should have been turned off by http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948496 which did come down via Windows Update, many moons ago.
