  You can remove the old version from the GPO more-or-less
immediately, as far as I know.  The what-upgrades-what information is
kept in the MSI.

  However, many MSI packages require the original install source to be
present during installation maintenance, including uninstalls.  Since
upgrades are often done as "uninstall old, install new", this means
you may need to have have the MSI source around for the upgrade to
work.

  Thus I generally try to keep the old MSI source around until I'm
reasonably confident that any old versions have upgraded.
