I just challenged our Service Desk team to get involved any IT community. We have 5 Service Desk guys and about 10 Systems Engineer's and to my knowledge only one other (none of the SD guys) are connected to any IT communities of any sort, be it listmail, forums, newsgroups, etc. Pretty small percentage...

And, those that do participate in communities tend to do better in their jobs and have a longer IT career. Even though the graphic in that article was only July 2011, that's really a long time in hype cycles. If someone were smart, they'd find a way to automate data accumulation from communities and develop a real world research org. Gartner, right now, is promoting the Cloud like there's nothing else. 3 years ago it was "outsourcing". Now, companies are bringing resources back in-house because they realized...
