I work in communities.

I see very little enterprise architecture and integration involvement in
communities. I see more technical line-level engineering and development
questions/answers.

There's a very small portion now that do not participate in a community
somewhere. And, those that do participate in communities tend to do better
in their jobs and have a longer IT career. So, I'm pretty sure the
demographic that does participate would have value and probably provide
better input than the small portion of those that don't.

Communities only reflect a portion of what's going on as well.

There's a certain demographic of the IT industry that seems to participate
in communities.

Do some searches for "gartner cloud" and look at some more recent articles.
Even though the graphic in that article was only July 2011, that's really a
long time in hype cycles.

If someone were smart, they'd find a way to automate data accumulation from
communities and develop a real world research org. It would be nice to see
"what the industry says" versus "what's really going on".

Really?

Gartner is saying that Cloud has entered the "meaningless hype" stage.

CIOs and CEOs still pay attention to this stuff because at least there is
some effort to justify the conclusion. Most IT people I've run into couldn't
write a business case to save their lives.

Yeah.their track record isn't great (particularly over the last couple
years), however, CIOs and CEOs still eat them up. Gartner, right now, is
promoting the Cloud like there's nothing else. 3 years ago it was
"outsourcing". Now, companies are bringing resources back in-house because
they realized... "Oops" that didn't work.

You just have to be very careful with "industry" information. It can be
just as politically motivated as anything else.

To me, Gartner's stats are just derived from flawed research and easily
subverted questions.

You're going to want to check with the research firms:

Gartner, IDC, Forrester, ITIC, etc (http://itic-corp.com/)
