The big difference is that the consumer has purchased "Big Brother". It's not
been forced on us by the government. Things like CarrierIQ are not wanted by
consumers, so once discovered heavy pressure is brought to bare on the
companies that use it, especially if used inappropriately.

ASB commented earlier that CarrierIQ had access to the source code of Android,
and not iOS. He stated that it "makes a world of difference in what can be
accomplished on each platform by a 3rd party", and he is likely correct. But I
am happy that we have open source phones systems like Andriod... that allow the
world to view the code. CarrierIQ was discovered on a rooted Android phone, was
it not? Unless people were able to hack their phones, they would not have found
out about it so quickly. If we all had iPhones and Windows phones, we may have
never found out.

Not entirely true on the smartphone bit. Cyanogemod is a project to "roll your
own" andorid on a device. They have support for lots of phones, and I even put
it on my recently purchased Touchpad. I can confidently say (but I can't really
confirm, as I haven't looked) that it doesn't have CarrierIQ in it.
