We've mostly been buying Lexmark laser printers for the past few years, and using their universal driver. It seems to be reasonably small and self-contained. Their support people, while sometimes clueless or hard to understand, at least consistently makes an effort to help, and will escalate if needed. As far as Lexmark's hardware goes: Prices seem to be pretty much an exact match for HPs of like specifications; I presume they are deliberately tracking one another. Build quality seems fine. They seem reliable. Some of Lexmark's designs don't seem to be as "smart" as HP's, but sophistication and complexity often go hand-in-hand, so that isn't always a bad thing. For color laser, I really like the Phaser 6280 DN.
