I just had a sit down with a sales rep and software engineer from Commvault the other day so we could discuss their software as a possible replacement to BackupExec. It was an excellent meeting and I was very impressed with their product and their level of knowledge they brought to this first "getting to know you" meeting. I also liked that when I asked "Can I do this?" the answer was always "yes, and here's how." I always here good things about them on this list which is what brought me to them in the first place.

One of the things we discussed was making backup to disk my first choice for backups with tape being used for retention and offsite protection. Backup to disk is something I played with plenty in BENT 9.1 and even in BENT 11d. I was always disappointed with the test results. Some data performed better to tape (AIT-3 SpectraLogic 12K Gator) while other data performed horribly in comparison to tape. The Commvault answer was the Veritas isn't coded to write efficiently to disk and that's the reason for the hit. They also said that this allowed me to effectively use cheap JBOD instead of relying on a tape emulating disk cabinets for performance. I'd like to know what your thoughts are on this claim and what real experience you have with Commvault or Veritas btd.

My disk target is a Dell PE2950 2.4GHz w/ 2GB RAM and Win2K3 SP2 and gigabit ethernet. 15 x 750GB SATA drives RAID 5 as one logical disk (something I would split up in my next implementation).

TIA!
