Wouldn't RAM come into play also? Are you going to be able to put in enough RAM with Std?

If you have dual quad cores, it's still only two processors, and that's what defines the Windows version you buy, even though windows sees 8 processor cores and will use them all. Regards, Michael B. If I was using Quad-Quad Cores which is most of my SQL systems now, even through its 16 processors logically its still only 4 Processors to Windows and still could use Windows 2003 Standard Edition? Ot would I need to push it to Enterprise edition. What I am getting tripped up on is the number of processors that Windows Sees and can they use them all. ( basically relating the cores within the processors to additional processors that windows might not be able to utilize because of the 8 processor rule for Windows 2003 Enterprise edition, but in this case if I am reading it right, a quad-quad core is still only 4 processors thus using Windows 2003 Std would still work) Can you confirm my logic on this one Michael. If you have a quad-core two processor machine, that's still SQL standard. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143760(SQL.100).aspx -----start quote----- SQL Server supports the specified number of processor sockets multiplied by the number of logical CPUs in each socket. For example, the following is considered a single processor for purposes of this table: A single-core, hyper-threaded processor with 2 logical CPUs per socket. A dual-core processor with 2 logical CPUs. A quad-core processor with 4 logical CPUs. SQL Server is licensed on per processor socket, and not per logical CPU basis. -----end quote----- Same is true for Windows Server. Regards, Michael B. I am getting more and more Quad-Core (2 and 4 Processor) machines and I want to make sure that I am ordering and specing the right OS ( Standard VS Enterprise 32bit Windows 2003/2008) Z Edward E. MY specific question is this, and my google fu and MSDN have failed me. If I had a Single Dual-Core processor its going to look and function as 2 Processors in Windows, therefore I can use Standard edition without an issue. If I had a Quad Core (Single) processor its going to look and function as 4 processors in Windows, therefore I can use Standard Edition without an issue. If I had 2 Quad Core Processors, its going to look and function as 8 processors in Windows and I need to utilize Enterprise Edition accordingly to get all the processor support. If I had 4 Quad Core Processors, its going to look and function as 16 processors and I need to move to Datacenter Edition? Here are the resources I have when I am hashing this out.
