Thanks JLC, it restored it to a functional level! One thing of note - it broke
the mirrors on the drives (3 raid 1 pairs) they all show up as separate drives
(6) any comments on correcting this?

Ran the full Dell diagnostics on it, they're fairly comprehensive.

What does "hardware checked out OK" mean?

Did you run the Windows Memory Diagnostic in Extended Test mode overnight?
Can you boot a BartPE or UBCD4WIN CD successfully and access the boot drive?

Machines don't go belly-up by themselves. It takes a software change or a
hardware failure to cause this. Assuming the server is properly protected
(firewall/antivirus) and not used improperly (e.g. surfing the net), the odds
favor hardware failure.

A "Repair install" won't affect 3rd party software but I only give it about a
50/50 chance at fixing this.

Carl

Same story, same if I choose LKGK, it just wouldn't get past 2 seconds worth of
splashscreen without rebooting and all the hardware checked out OK. Not the way
I wanted to start the week (it's my email archive server and my lusers tend to
use Exchange for file storage.....(grumbling as he walks off to the server
room) >;-(

What's the behavior when trying safe mode?

I have a 2003 server that went belly up over the weekend. It has some
proprietary software I'd rather not reinstall if possible. I've gone into the r
console and tried chkdsk \r. As well as fixboot but it still gets to the
windows splash and reboots. Any ideas or thoughts appreciated, TIA
