Len, are you running a 64 bit version of Vista by chance. I have an 8525 and initially had issues with Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I will admit that I am running WM6.0 (or is it 6.1?) and have not tried it with WM 5.0.
I was running some custom cooked ROMs on my 8525 when I took it WM6.0 and didn't see any negative effects. HTH.
