Have you tried the LaserJet Series II drivers?  I've found those to be
an "old standby" for nearly any older HP LaserJet.

Did that (more than once), it did not work.  There was no hope fro 
Laserjet 5 and, as I mentioned originally, even though the Laserjet 4 
installs, it goes to offline
