It depends on the SATA controller. Any decent eSATA controller will report the hard drive as a removable device rather than a fixed device.
If the SATA controller reports the drive as a removable device it's plug-n-pray, just like USB. Only with faster transfer rates ;) If the SATA controller reports the drive as a fixed device (ie most integrated SATA) the admin will be required to scan for hardware changes in Device Manager.
