I remember reading something like this a few months ago. It seems that the
issue is that XP does not support the AHCI drives by default.

It is recommended that, at that time, to do the XP installation for ATA and
then, after the installation, do the update for AHCI. I know that Microsoft
does have an updated driver for AHCI (I think).

My issue was that we had a customer who purchased some HP Laptops. They came
with Vista Business SP1, but the customer needed XP Professional. When
trying to install the XP Professional CD it wouldn't load. Had to change the
BIOS to ATA instead of default AHCI. After doing that, XP would load.

A month later, I remember reading that someone else had the same issue. But
they went a step further; the person reported that once XP was loaded they
went into Device Manager, updated the driver for the IDE with the AHCI
Driver. They then rebooted, changed the BIOS back to AHCI, and XP came up.

Further reading suggested to 'slip-stream' the needed drivers into the
installation CD. Basically, XP does not have support for AHCI when doing an
installation, the drivers aren't there... you have to supply them. If you
get the proper drivers, and then put them the proper location, XP will find
the drivers and load AHCI drivers when doing the installation.

Hope this helps.
