It has been a while since I even attempted to use it, but my recollection is that there were some things that weren't possible via the ADSM and some things didn't result in IOS code that I expected. I didn't find the interface particularly intuitive, either. At this point, I have written code to automatically create the IOS configuration for the Cisco gear that we most commonly deploy (90%+). I have no aversion to GUI's, just prefer the command-line in this case. And, as you encountered, you have to wrangle Java and that is never fun. As far as Cisco engineers that we have come on-site over the years, I have never seen one do anything other than go through the IOS. YMMV.

He's starting to win me over, slowly but surely... Have you seen any specific issues with the ASDM? Thanks, Jonathan L. It's mostly an after-thought. Go in and get your hands dirty in the IOS. I'm not saying that there isn't any utility to the GUIs, but I particularly wouldn't trust it with configuring a security appliance (ASA/Pix). ________________________________ From: Bill Lambert [mailto:blamb...@concuity.com] Sent: Thursday, August 20, 2009 10:20 AM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: RE: sort of OT Thanks, all, for the responses...you guys are the best! I tried all of your solutions but nothing worked. Then I found buried deep in the Release Notes for the app (not in the system requirements that I would think would be more intuitive) that you have to change a specific setting in a properties file. Specifically it was changing the Java Virtual Machine memory heap from the default of 1020mb to something lower. I changed it to 512mb and that did it! Is it me or does Cisco stuff seem overly complicated? Anyway, thanks a million for all your suggestions.
