I use Digi's USB anywhere with their Serial adapter plugged in to it. Not for modems specifically but for communications with other devices. Been rock solid so far. I have three USB anywhere's hooked up to VM's for License dongles etc. Looks like the Avocent would be a cheaper solution if someone can verify it works well.
