He put an ad on Craigslist and got the following email.

James

Thanks for your prompt reply. I actually want to buy your item and
make payment as fast as possible but i will appreciate it if we can
both deal on transparency and honesty, you know why? In recent time, i
bought an item from a seller and after he received my payment, he
never ships out the item and i never heard from him again. So i will
be very glad if you can render your total co-operation on this
 transaction.
My mode of payment for this item will be through united state money order
because, thats the only means of payment i have access to presently
and i dont mind offering you Extra$100 provided you can reserve the item
for me while i make payment and also, i will wait till the check clear
your bank before i arrange for the shipping.

As for the shipping, am shipping the item within the United State
because am located in Chicago, so shipping will be handled by my
shipping company as soon as you verify and confirmed payment, so all i
need from you is to know when you will be available at your address so
that my shipping company can come and pick up the item.

If this sounds good and you are okay with my payment and shipping
arrangements, do let me have your full name and address plus your
direct phone number as it will be written on the check so that i can
forward it to my finance house to prepare it for you to receive it ontime.

Your quick respond will highly be appreciated

  John,
I think you need to carefully consider the nature of this transaction. There
are enough unanswered questions, or more to the point questions I don't like
the possible answers, which would make me walk away from the transaction. For
example, you stated previously, if he presents you with one Office CD, you
will ask for multiple keys to install. How will you know if those are actually
valid keys, and legally permissible to use on the equipment you have? You
indicate he's agreed to your price, you don't indicate how you acquired this
business, whether you and he have a personal or professional relationship
(based on your emails, it doesn't appear that you do). All this is enough for
me to walk away. Sure he's agreed to your price. For $450 he is transferring
the risk to you in the event his enterprise is less than legal, he can simply
say you did the work and assured him everything was fine. You're then caught
in the middle of a he said/he said battle with legal, possible criminal
implications.

Be warned that you may still be held liable for
copyright/contract/license violations if it turns out this "client"
didn't have the rights to do what he's asking you to do.

"I didn't know" may sound good to you, but the courts don't always agree.
