Could the driver perhaps be printing the document as an image, versus vectors? i.e., when something doesn't print correctly from Adobe Reader, you have an option to "print as image" which will rasterize all vectors/curves/fonts in the document. Perhaps its rasterizing with a nearest-neighbor resizing algorithm which would cause fine gridlines to disappear. I dunno, just an idea.
