I think the XP issue wasn't due to client side preferences, but due to how the task scheduler runs. The article said, "Prerequisites: This is a Windows Vista+ configuration as Windows XP has a more limited scheduling engine."
But I think I may have resolved the issue. Will know for sure shortly.
