USB speeds vary quite a lot, depending on the type of drive (flash, Winchester, etc.), speed of drive (especially with flash, not all drives are created equal), speed of bridge chip (for hard disks), speed of USB host controller, phase of the moon, etc. But even at the best of times, it's going to be somewhat pokey.
