  I think your second sentence is part of the problem, really.

  The SSL cert vendors (Verisign, et. al.) spend a lot of advertising
resources telling people to "look for the padlock" and "get a
certificate to secure your site", etc., etc.  But server
authentication and secure transport is only part of the problem.  And
even within the problem domain of SSL, the CAs don't do squat to
verify identify before handing out certs.
