In fact ext3 is supposed to be very safe.
I never had to repair the file system manually; after one reboot or two the file system always has been repaired successfully and without any errors.

You're probably out of luck with your CD-RW drive. Yours is from IBM and these drives have a special IBM firmware and I couldn't find a different firmware in the internet - only the one from IBM.

Well if I putt the drive in after the boot sequence it would spin in mac os9 but not read, however if it was put in before boot it would givethe black screen of death. This teac was taken from an IBM pc laptop, its numbers are : TEAC CD-W28E -0B1 - u
Part NO. 19770820-B1 - DC 5V 2.4A rev:301 mfr June 2002
I'm not sure about the adapter board number as the one from the original apple drive fites nicely onto the new drive onces its own adapter is removed. You may be right about the connection not being snug. But the only way that I could be sure about that is to take the laptop apart when making the connection.

I'd lie to figure out how to get it going, and when I was putting it together I was thinking to myself - that Tobias is a clever fellow to have figured this out.

By the way, have you any ideas about a less breakable file system than ext3 for debppc linux? I am going to start reinstalling today or tommorow. I broke my ext3 system because of pmu problems. Also, is there any advantage to having all the file system on the / partitions as opposed to having a partition for / , home and whatever else? Of course it is a given that I will have a large swap. Ice trip wrote something about this but he didn't give an idea about size or rational.

I am leaning toward putting the whole system on / but I am hoping that there is a less breakable type of file system.

Thanks,
Vito

I have tried three different drives and never had the problem you have
got.
Maybe you have to get a different firmware that has to be uploaded on
an x86-PC.
The exact type/version of my drive is "TEAC CD-W28E-093-U", Revision C,
manufactured January 2002.
The type/version of my adaptor board is "PC5 T/B 12XCDROM REV:3D",
"19979424 TYT".

Are you sure everything was conntected tightly?

To Tobias and all who are interested in the possibility of having a rw
crom drive in the powerbook 1400c. I bought a teac w28 rwcdrom. Upon
1st inspection it appears not suited for the 1400c, however, when one
removes the port connector from the back, one finds that it is only an
adaptor, and further that the adaptor and front brvel from the
original mac cdrom 12x drive fit nicely onto the read write teac w28e.

Now for the bad news, after having put the rw teac into the old apple
12x read only drive case and putting it into the expansion bay , that
when I turned the computer on , as soon as it sees the drive -
dingdong and the black screen of death appears.

What do you thing dead drive, i/o problem, adaptor failure. I will
probably put the old drive back and hope that it still works, and
return the new rw teac if I can get my money back.

Close but no cigar. Has anyone experienced the same problem?

Hi Vito,

I needed to open the case of the media bay module. Mine contained a
TEAC 10x (Apple claimed 12x) CD-ROM drive whose form factor is very
close to the standard slim-line CD-ROM drives. In order to dissassemble
I needed to remove the four screws on the sides of the module and pull
the grey bottom case. The connector adaptor board fitted with the
CD-W28E.
Only one of the mounting screw holes was at the same position but
that's sufficient.

I don't know if the media bay case of the 6x and 8x units are
different.

Tobias,

Did you have to disassemble the origninal cd rom drive and take the
innards of the teac drive and drop it into the old original mac cdrom
drive casing to make it work , or did it just fit in the bay right out
of the box.

Loosk like I learned the hard way, but it doesn't look like I will be
able to upgrade my CD-ROM drive with my current model. A website I
came across led me to believe that all the 1400 Drives could be
upgraded (including the 6x, 8x, and 12x), but this looks to not be
true. I have an 8x and purchased through Ebay a teac 8x CD-RW drive to do the upgrade. As it turns out, my drive doesn't have to correct
adaptor.
Does anyone know how I could do this with my current drive. Looks
like if I want the 12x drive, I will have to spend $30 on ebay to buy
one whereas the teac only cost me $10. Wouldn't I only need the
connector itself? Is there anywhere I could buy one of these.

Yes, you only need the adapter of a 12x unit. Perhaps you could wait
for a defective one appearing on ebay.

I was hoping to get a CD-RW in this thing to be able to burn to data
discs when need be. Once I do get this up and running, what burning
apps would be rocommended?

I have been using Xcdroast as a frontend to cdrecord. However to work
with the 800x600 resolution one has to pass it a special command line
parameter and then the window is too big for the screen so one has to
move the window around to be able to access all buttons. But it is
working quite well.
You will also need the SCSI emulation kernel extension and to disable
the IDE CD-ROM driver.
In MacOS I have been using Charismac Discribe that is available as a
trial version whose trial period can be overriden by deleting a hidden file in the System Folder. I prefer Discribe to Xcdroast because it is
very easy to create bootable HFS CDs with it what I need for the
miboot
ISOs.
