Just installed the new image, at the debian splash
screen I notice that something funky has happened to
the color scheme. I probably need to reset the pmu to
get this working properly, it probably is trying to
use 16 bit color.
I tried a change to the video driver.
I removed it now.
-> new kernel images available in the same place.
Can this new image charge the battery? Or even monitor
its existance?

The battery will always be charged because the PMU is totally independent from the CPU. It is itself an 8 bit CPU with own ROM and RAM.

I uploaded changed pmud packages to my webspace that will allow you to use common apps for battery monitoring. The displayed charge level is much too low but the voltage and temperature values are correct (when using "Batmon" form pmud-utils).
The packages are:
http:/home.vrweb.de/internetzel/pmud_0.10-9.1_powerpc.deb
http:/home.vrweb.de/internetzel/pmud-utils_0.10-9.1_powerpc.deb
