Yep! That did the trick!

Gah, that part of the Powerbook was not well-designed. I miss the 
way some of the older Thinkpads arranged the insides.

I will find a 3.5-to-2.5" adapter and attempt installation from an .iso
image dd'ed to the disk. I'll report my success or failure on this list.
