even less python but maybe what you r looking at. You can let you guide out of any tree and name it VIEWER_INPUT, it will appear on top over everything and you can turn it off by pressing the IP button.
It will never be rendered as it is not in the tree

Thanks Ron, but I guess my question is, what would that python script be?

And is there a variable I could define to make the selection of effected nodes simple?

You can drop an expression into the disable knob that uses the
    $gui statement.
It will give you 1 if the gui is on and 0 if it's off. so a 1-$gui
will give you what you are after. That is if you render on a farm
    or through a terminal.
Otherwise you can use the Python tab in the Write node and call up
a Python script in the before render text box.

        Hello all,
I am wondering if there is a way to script a node to be
        disabled during rendering.

This is similar to After Effects option to make a "guide
layer", which you can reference while working in the script,
but does not render. It's quite handy for a number of things.

        Thanks
        Dan
