Thank you for your advice. I followed the advice about installing python from homebrew. I then ran "brew doctor" and re-arranged the paths as it told me to. It also gives another list of warnings which I'll put at the bottom of this email.
My question is now, what is the best way to install numpy (and scipy, and matplotlib), so that it will couple with the brew-installed python?
