I've replaced batteries in various APC battery trays without incident.
It's not difficult to find the correct aftermarket batteries from
sources such as Batteries Plus or Gruber Power. The best of the lot was
a 5U 3KVA unit that had fully-enclosed steel battery trays with their
own wiring harness and hot-plug connector. That UPS, sadly, was badly
damaged in transport by a moving company who ignored specific instructions.
I moved away from the 3KVA APC rackmount units after the second
SU3000RM3U in a row failed in the same dramatic way. (The first just
blew up an output transistor, the second did so so violently as to
actually melt a hole in its mainboard.)
My current Cyberpower main UPS is another story. Its battery "trays"
are horrifying. I have seen thicker, stronger plastic on blister packs
at the supermarket. I ended up resorting to strapping the battery packs
together with duct tape. The DSP-based HP unit between the APCs and the
Cyberpower had a lot to like about it, but unfortunately it was deranged
and would never come out of self-test until it was hard power-cycled.
