I think the source of confusion are two:
(1) double meaning of the phrase "search engine"
(2) use of nutch icon.

In general, the phrase "search engine" means at least two things:
search engine software and internet search site. Before Nutch project,
there was no need to separate them, because they were always tied together
and owned by the same entity. However a separation seems imperative now.

Looking back at Linux kernel and Linux/GNU distribution
evolution/revolution, there were similar confusing moments too.

As a believer of opensource (for fun and for profit), I would image
a future, full of sites like mozDex that uses Nutch or
other yet-to-be-written opensource search engine softwares
as its core.

To remove this confusion, we may call Nutch or similar as
"search engin core", or simply "search core", akin to kernel in
opensource OS world. Entities such as mozDex are "search sites",
powered by Nutch core, plus, possibly, many other components, e.g.,
carrot2 clustering engine.

As for the visual identity, it's for mozDex's own benefit not to use
Nutch's logo. Redhat, Suse and Debian, etc. all have their own logos,
even though the penguin is at their cores.

Finally, to make opensource search a success, we need both talented
& creative developers like Doug and enthusiastic & imaginative
entrepreneurs like Byron.
