All,

Its been a little while since my last correspondance
to the group but i wanted to publish an udpate about
mozdex.com and what we are actively seeking for to
help build a more sustainable project.

--------- Updates: ------------

Mozdex.com

Focus:

Creating an Open and Fair index through open
technologies and open ideas.

Goals:

* Index 500 million pages
* Export services through SOAP, XML and .NET type
interfaces
* Research New search technologies and methodologies
* Remain Open V Document APIs, Publish indexes &
database for download V Be a hub for internet
search technologies, services and data.
* Retain community support to make project more
financially stable and community aware.

About Mozdex:

Mozdex was created as a proposal for a completely
transparent search engine. The idea is to put a
science behind the technology so search systems
can be implemented quickly and efficiently to adopt
growing technologies and changing content. I would
like to continue to make mozdex more of a community
project instead of a one man project and thus I am
asking for support from the community to help make
the project what it can be as well as to build
financial and support stability. We are seeking at
least four core supporters for financial support over
the next 15 days to bring mozdex.com fully online
again and to finish acquisition of hardware. At one
point we had a commited party but due to buyout of
organizaiton this has since fallen through and we are
looking to spread out over a few core supporters to
alleviate the "fallout" from a single loss of support.

Current Hardware:

Mozdex is currently deployed on the following
hardware:

Core Server (database)
AMD Opteron 244
4 Gigs Memory
5x250 gig IDE
CentOS 3 (RHEL)

Query Servers (x4)
AMD Athlon XP 2400
2 Gigs memory
CentOS 3 (Rhel)

Tomcat (web server)
AMD Athlon XP 2400
1 gig memory
CentOS 3 (rhel)

CentOS is a freely available implementation of RHEL.
We chose CentOS to remain compatible with industry
standard server implementations of linux as well
as to remain compatible with 3rd party vendor support.

Search Software:

Mozdex is powered by Nutch (http://www.nutch.org)
running inside the Java 5.0 (jdk 1.5.0 b2) jvm. On
our Opteron servers we utilize the 64bit JVM while on
the Athlon XPs the standard 32 bit jvm is in use.
Java 5 integrates nicely with our JMX management
console to have a better understanding and overview of
our servers from a single management interface.
Components of Nutch are integrating JMX technologies
as well to help build a managed and scalable search
platform. Even though Java 5 is still considered
beta it has been our platform of choice for
stability, performance and support of the opterons 64
bit capabilities.

Projects:

* Integration with eXo Platform: Ability to index &
search eXo CMS documents as well as integrate with
JSR 168 portlets that offer internet/intranet search
and index management. eXo was selected because of its
adoption of standard technologies and adoption of a
clean JSR 168 Portlet interface. Because of our
standardization on JSR 168 portlets you would be able
to use the internet/intranet search services on any
Open source or commercial portlet container such as
IBM WebSphere, Oracle 10gAS and others.

* JMX implementations V Work on integrating Nutch to
support JMX management interfaces.

professionals willing to donate time and experience to
make the project successful. We are seeking skilled
Unix/Linux administrators, Skilled iSCSI / SAN
