The patch seems to have fixed the indexing problem as I can now create a 
complete index on the segment I was having problems with before.

I see no reason not to have this committed to trunk.

Yes, I was running the fetch in parse mode so that may be the problem as you 
suggested. I'm currently running the same fetch, with your fetcher patch 
applied. I will report back with the result when the process is done.
