Instead of pinging (and all the IP and ARP headaches that involves),
I'd suggest using a multicast or broadcast message sent to ethertype
9000 (loopback).  If the other interfaces can hear your message, then
they're in the same Ethernet broadcast domain, and can (and probably
should) be IPMP'd together.
