yawp, MAC address are split up/assigned by manufacturer, in fact it's
pretty much how linux tells which vendor's card/chipset you are using by
matching up the vendor against the MAC's string.

search google for something like "MAC address string vendor list" and you
should be able to find some useful listings.  the open-source unix app
ettercap (ettercap.sourceforge.net) has a built in 'fingerprinting'
functionality based on matching MAC strings w/vendor's list.

as far as the specific model goes, that's kinda hit-or-miss (a lot more
miss).  best intutive guess off the MAC would be to know of several of
other confirmed MAC addresses for the same vendor/model and the target
you're guessing falls within that range since they're usually run off the
same production line.
