The BOS April count was the highlight of reports received April 8
through April 15 from the Niagara Frontier Region.
The BOS April count on the 11th produced a high number of species
and individuals across the region. In western Niagara County - 97
species, in eastern Niagara County - at least 86 species, and 63
species in the Towns of Marilla and Darien.
Widely reported on the count, multiples of YELLOW-B. SAPSUCKER,
NORTHERN FLICKER, EASTERN PHOEBE, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, BROWN CREEPER,
WINTER WREN, GOLDEN-CR. KINGLET, RUBY-
CR. KINGLET, HERMIT THRUSH, BROWN THRASHER, PINE WARBLER, EASTERN
TOWHEE, CHIPPING SPARROW, FOX SPARROW and PURPLE FINCH. On Lake
Ontario, RED-THROATED LOON, COMMON LOON, HORNED GREBE and RED-NECKED
GREBE, while SURF SCOTERS and LESSER SCAUP outnumbered WHITE-WINGED
SCOTERS and GREATER SCAUP. Shorebirds on the count included GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, DUNLIN, WILSON'S SNIPE and AMERICAN
WOODCOCK.
Other count highlights - AMERICAN BITTERN on Feeder Road in the
Iroquois Refuge. 4 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS in Darien. BROAD-WINGED HAWK
in Niagara County. 2 LITTLE GULLS at Lewiston. At Emery Park in the
Town of Wales - 2 BARRED OWLS and a flyover COMMON RAVEN. And, 45
AMERICAN PIPITS in Darien.
April 11, a SANDHILL CRANE on the Feeder Road at the Iroquois
Refuge. April 6 in the Tillman Wildlife Management Area in Clarence, 2
passing SANDHILL CRANES, plus VIRGINIA RAIL, PILEATED WOODPECKER, 6
FOX SPARROWS and 10 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS.
Recent reports from the Saint Columbans property in the Chautauqua
County Town of Sheridan - GLAUCOUS GULL, 33 GOLDEN-CR. KINGLETS, 14
RUBY-CR. KINGLETS, 3 BL.-GR. GNATCATCHERS and up to 5 PINE WARBLERS.
At Forest Lawn in Buffalo, an early HOUSE WREN on April 11. Also
BL.-CR. NIGHT-HERON and WILD TURKEY, that may explain the turkey
reported last week at Main Street and Kensington Avenue.
April 9 at Rich's Marina in Buffalo's Riverside, ICELAND GULL and a
very high count for mid-April - 157 COMMON TERNS. Also, small numbers
of CASPIAN TERNS at the marina and Dunkirk Harbor this week.
Other reports - in the Iroquois Refuge, OSPREYS nest building in a
tree along the snowmobile trail east of Meadville Road. Other OSPREYS
- Beech Road in Hamburg, Beaver Island State Park on Grand Island,
River Road in Tonawanda and the Town of Colden. PEREGRINE FALCON
continues on the south Grand Island bridges. And migrant BROAD-WINGED
HAWKS now at the Hamburg Hawkwatch in Lakeside Cemetery in Hamburg.
Visitors are welcome any day at the Camp Road location.
