This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of March 14 , 2010 Highlights: ----------- AMERICAN BITTERN EURASIAN WIGEON COMMON (EURASIAN) TEAL SANDHILL CRANE LESSER YELLOWLEGS WILSON’S SNIPE ICELAND GULL LESSER YELLOWLEGS LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL NORTHERN SHRIKE FIELD SPARROW PURPLE FINCH
Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 3/25: An EURASIAN WIGEON was spotted in one of the impoundments at Marten’s Tract. 3 EURASIAN WIGEON were found at the back of Tschache Pool on a waterfowl survey. These birds would not be visible from the observation tower. Also seen at Tschache and accessable from the tower were 4 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS and 1 ICELAND GULL. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen on VanDyne Spoor Road. It was also relocated the next day. 3/26: 1 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was found at Tschache Pool. 2 SANDHILL CRANES were seen at the Visitor’s Center. 3/27: A COMMON or EURASIAN TEAL was seen at the Visitor’s Center. It was relocated on the 28th. Derby Hill ------------ Cold weather and north winds made for a slow week. Only 863 raptors, mostly TURKEY VULTURES, were counted and no new species were reported. Oswego County ------------ 3/25: 13 species were found on Maple Bay as Oneida Lake starts to clear of ice. A possible Eared Grebe was seen but could not be confirmed Madison County ------------ 3/25: A FOS LESSER YELLOWLEGS was found at Ditchband Road. Jefferson County ------------ 3/23: An early AMERICAN BITTERN was found on Fort Drum. There was no report of the TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE this week. Extralimital ------------ Many birders visited The Jordan’s in Livonia this week to see the LEWIS’S WOODPECKER present since November. Please call ahead (Fred Jordan 585-229-2144) to make a reservation to come to see the bird.
