This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of April 18 , 2010 Highlights: ----------- RED-THROATED LOON RED-NECKED GREBE NORTHERN GOSHAWK SWAINSON’S HAWK MERLIN COMON MOORHEN BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER GREATER YELLOWLEGS LESSER YELLOWLEGS UPLAND SANDPIPER MARBLED GODWIT DUNLIN NORTHERN SHRIKE FISH CROW
Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 4/21: A FOS AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER was spotted on Carncross Road. 4/23: A MARBLED GODWIT was found at the new shorebird area along the Wildlife Drive. It was not relocated the next day or today. Other shorebirds seen this week were GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS, DUNLIN, WILSON’S SNIPE, and KILLDEER. Derby Hill ------------ Mostly it was a great week at Derby. 4/22, 4/23, and 4/25 had 1,000 plus flights of BROADWING HAWKS. On 4/18 a FOS BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER was spotted. On 4/22 there were 15 species of raptor highlighted by a juvenile light phase SWAINSON’S HAWK. On 4/25 7 SANDHILL CRANES flew by. The weekly total was 7,360 raptors counted. Oswego County ------------ 4/19: 2 RED-NECKED GREBES were found at various locations on Pneida Lake. A COMMON MOORHEN was found in the Rt.6 wetland north of Rt.3 in the Town of Volnay. 4/21: A FOS COMMON TERN was seen from Phillips Point on Oneida Lake. 2 MERLINS were also seen 4/22: A FOS UPLAND SANDPIPER was found at it’s usual location at the Oswego County Airport. 4/24: A late NORTHERN SHRIKE was found along Rt.3 just north of Port Ontario. 16 species of migrating birds were seen from Phillips Point on Oneida Lake. Highlights were SURF SCOTER, WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, RED-THROATED LOON, and RED-NECKED GREBE.
