I posted a picture of the Greater White-fronted Goose to my web site
http://stevewalternature.com/ . This one has a mostly pink bill, which would
point it to the less expected in these parts taiga race.

Some thoughts on the recent discussion of Cackling and Canada Goose. Any new
information would be useful here. I’ve found my way to some of the articles on
the web. It seems most of them were written shortly after the taxonomic split,
so about a decade old. There’s a lot of mention of what is not known. Some of
what was “known” seems confusing or conflicting. And with a lot more people
looking and taking pictures since then, tying that in would surely help. For
example, something is amiss if I read that only one subspecies of Cackling
Goose can occur in the east, when the eyes and photos suggest otherwise.

One amusing note that I read in one of the articles – the Canada and Cackling
split (the biological, not taxonomical one) is thought to have occurred a
million years ago. Hmm. Homo sapiens and Homo neanderthalensis had a more
recent common ancestor.

The bird was flushed again by an off leashed dog. It flew into the lake and is
still there as of this moment near the north end.

The bird was just flushed by a dog and flew off to the north in the company of
a Canada Goose.

Good luck if you go searching for it.
