2019

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and and Montezuma Wetlands Complex 
(MWC)

     21 species of Shorebirds were recorded at the complex this week. 
Highlights were RED KNOT, WHIMBREL, BLACK-NECKED STILT and RUDDY TURNSTONE.




     5/21: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was spotted on Mays Point Road. This may be 
a bird looking to nest as they have in the past.

     5/22: A BLACK-NECKED STILT was found near the spillway on the Wildlife 
trail. It was present through the 27th.

     5/23: A breeding plumaged LAPLAND LONGSPUR was seen at Carncross Road. Up 
to 19 WHIMBREL have been spotted along the Wildlife Trail and are still being 
seen today.

     5/24: A number of RED KNOTS were seen distantly from the Wildlife Trail. 
They are still being seen as of today. A HUDSONIAN GODWIT was seen briefly at 
Carncross Road.

     5/25: An AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER was seen at Carncross Road. It was seen 
again on the 26th.

     5/26: A SANDERLING and an AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER were see on the Wildlife 
Drive. An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was found on the South Spring Pond Pool. 
PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS continue at the wooded area of Armitage Road. 
PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS were also found at Howland Island.

     5/27: 3 GLOSSY IBIS were seen along the Wildlife Drive. A PHILADELPHIA 
VIREO was seen at Towpath Road.

     5/28: 38 RED KNOTS1 WHIMBREL, 20 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and 5 RUDDY 
TURNSTONES were found at the Wildlife Drive.







Cayuga County

------------




     5/22: RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were seen on West Bay Road and at West 
Barrier Bar Park in Fair Haven.

     5/23: 2 RUDDY TURNSTONES were seen at West Barrier Bar Park.

     5/24: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER and a RED KNOT were seen at West Barrier Bar 
Park.







Onondaga County

------------




     5/21: A LEAST BITTERN was found at the Dewitt Marsh off of Fisher Road .

     5/23: An ACADIAN FLYCATCHER has returned to Whiskey Hollow west of 
Baldwinsville. 8 species of shorebirds including WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER were 
found at the Gerber Top Soil Farm in Kirkville.

     5/26: A BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER was seen from the West Shore Trail on 
Onondaga Lake. A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was seen at Three Rivers WMA north 
of Baldwinsville.

     5/27: 50 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen at a privete residence on Oran Delphi 
Road south of Manlius.







Derby Hill Bird Observatory

     5/20 was a big day at Derby with 3,231 raptors counted, most being 
BROAD-WINGED HAWKS. 84 BALD EAGLES were counted that day also. Since then it 
has quieted down for the last week of the official count. Thanks to Karl Bardon 
for such a thorough job of counting, especially passerines. On 5/23 835 BRANT 
were counted.







Oswego County

------------




     5/20: A BROWN PELICAN was seen and photographed from Sunset Bay Park on 
Lake Ontario. No further sightings have been reported.

     5/21: An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen at Great Bear Recreation Area 
north of Phoenix. A PROTHONOTARY WARBLER was found at Peter Scott Swamp north 
of Phoenix. An AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN was seen on Oneida Lake from 

Constantia. It was seen through 5/25.

     5/23: A RED KNOT was seen from Mill Street in Constantia.

     5/25: An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was see at Great Bear Recreation Area 
north of Phoenix. It was seen through the 27th.A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen 
at Sunset Bay Park on Lake Ontario.

     5/26: A GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH was seen at Deer Creek Marsh south of Sandy 
Pond.







Madison County

------------




     5/23: A SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER and a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER were seen on 
Ditchbank Road north of Canastota.

     5/26: A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and an ORCHARD ORIOLE were seen on 
Ditchbank Road.







Oneida County

------------




     5/22: 3 CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS and a GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH were found at 
Spring Farm Nature Sanctuary south of Clinton.

     5/23: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen at Verona Beach State Park and 
another was seen further north along Lake Shore Drive.

     5/26: A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was seen at Lake Julia Preserve south of 
Forestport.







Herkimer County

------------




     5/23: A BLACK VULTURE was seen on Jerseyfield Road north of Dolgeville.

     5/25: A BLACK VULTURE was seen from Reese Road in Frankfort.
