*New York July 08 2019 NYSY 07. 08. 19 Hotline: Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert To report by email: brinjoseph AT yahoo DOT com Reporting upstate counties: Onondaga, Oswego, Madison, Oneida, Herkimer, Cayuga, Montezuma Wildlife Refuge and Montezuma Wetlands Complex Compiled: July 08 at 12:00 p.m. Compiler: Joseph Brin Onondaga Audubon Homepage: www.onondagaaudubon.org Greetings: This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of July 01, 2019 Highlights: COMMON LOON LEAST BITTERN BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON CANVASBACK RED-SHOULDERED HAWK SANDHILL CRANE GREATER YELLOWLEGS LESSER YELLOWLEGS LEAST SANDPIPER CASPIAN TERN BLACK TERN FISH CROW GRASSHOPPER SPARROW ORCHARD ORIOLE Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ PROTHONOTARY WARBLER(s) continue to be seen and heard at the forested area on Armitage Road. 7/6: LEAST BITTERN and BLACK TERN were seen at Knox-Marsellus Marsh.The first sighting of migrating shorebirds, 59 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 4 GREATER YELLOWLEGS and 1 LEAST SANDPIPER were all seen along the Wildlife Drive. Spotted Sandpiper, a local breeder, was seen also. A COMMON LOON and a CANVASBACK were spotted at Knox-Marsellus Marsh. A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen at Railroad Road Marshes. 7/8: 48 BLACK TERNS were seen from the tower at Tschache Pool. Onondaga County ------------ 7/3: 2 ORCHARD ORIOLES were seen at Green Lakes State Park. 7/6: 2 CASPIAN TERNS were seen at the Raddison River Park (private) on the Seneca River north of Rt. 31. Oswego County ------------ 7/5: 9 CASPIAN TERNS were seen at Selkirk Shores State Park on Lake Ontario. 7/6: 2 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS were seen at a private resicence on Baum Road in Hastings. Madison County ------------ 7/1: An ORCHARD ORIOLE was seen on Ditchbank Road north of Canastota. 7/4: A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen at MorrowMountain State Forest south of Erieville. 7/5: A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was seen at the Madison street Impoundment north of Hamilton.
