This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of August 24, 2020 Highlights: ----------- BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON WILSON’S PHALAROPE BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER RED KNOT RUDDY TURNSTONE HUDSONIAN GODWIT MARBLED GODWIT BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER BAIRD’S SANDPIPER STILT SANDPIPER ARCTIC TERN LONT-TAILED JAEGER LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL SAW-WHET OWL COMMON NIGHTHAWK RED-HEADED WOODPECKER OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER PHILADELPHIA VIREO RED CROSSBILL Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 8/26: 19 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, 1 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, 1 BAIRD’S SANDPIPER, 1 STILT SANDPIPER and a COMMON NIGHTHAWK were all seen from East Road. 8/27: A MARBLED GODWIT was again seen at Knox-Marsellus Marsh. A BAIRD’S SANDPIPER was seen from VanDyne Spoor Road. 8/28: 11 species of shorebirds including a RED SNOT, a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, a STILT SANDPIPER and both DOWITCHERS were all seen at Knox-Marsellus Marsh. 8/29: The RED KNOT was relocated at Knox-Marsellus Marsh. 8/30: 12 species of shorebirds including the RED KNOT were seen at Knox-Marsellus Marsh. 2 BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS were seen from VanDyne Spoor Road. Cayuga County ------------ 8/25: 3 RUDDY TURNSTONES and 11 SANDERLINGS were seen at West Barrier Bar Park in Fair Haven. Onondaga County ------------ 8/25: RED CROSSBILLS continue to be seen at the corner of Shakham Road and Herlihy Road in the Morgan Hill State Forest. 8/28: An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen on Shakham Road in the Morgan Hill State Forest. 2 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen of Fenner Road north of Baldwinsville. 8/29: An ARCTIC TERN was seen on the southwest end of Onondaga Lake in Syracuse. A BAIRD’S SANDPIPER was seen at Oneida Shores County Park in Brewerton. 8/30: A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL along with the BAIRD’S SANDPIPER were found at Oneida Shores County Park. Oswego County ------------ 8/25: A LONG-TAILED JAEGER was seen from the bluffs at Derby Hill on Lake Ontario. 8/26: 2 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were seen at the Oswego County Airport in Fulton. 8/28: 6 species of shorebirds including a RED KNOT were seen at the outlet of Sandy Pond on Lake Ontario. A COMMON NIGHTHAWK was seen in Hastings. Madison County ------------ 8/24: A SAW-WHET OWL was heard at Stony Pond State Forest south of Cazenovia. 8/25: A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was again found at the Sky High sod Farm north of Chitenango and was seen through the 28th. 8/28: A BAIRD’S SANDPIPER wa seen at the Sky High Sod Farm and was relocated on the 29th. 8/30: 2 RED CROSSBILLS were seen at Tudcarora Lake north of Erieville. 5 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen in Oneida Castle. Oneida County ------------ 8/24: 2 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen at the Kirkland Town Park. 8/25: A RUDDY SHELDUCK, in all probability an escape, was again seen at the Main Streetoverlook at Delta Lake. 8/26: A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER and an AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER were seen from the overlook at Delta Lake. the BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was seen through the 28th. 8/29: 10 species of shorebirds including 3 BAIRD’S SANDPIPER were seen from the overlook at Delta Lake.
