Tuesday, 1 September 2009 - N.Y. City region migrants
The good general migration since cooler weather came our way continued, with more in the way of some typical September migrants. In the city parks some thought diversity down a bit on Monday while numbers of some common land-bird migrants may have increased a bit. A fairly large movement of Chimney Swifts and various swallows with a small component of Purple Martins was noted in multiple locations not far from NYC. I covered the Hook Mt. hawk-watch this morning & afternoon, & although the migrant raptor flight there appeared to be minimal, the swift-swallow flight was impressive, with a nearly continuous flow of at least several thousand of swifts alone, & far more than that number of swallows (with an occasional Purple Martin). The swallows appeared to be a mix of predominantly Barn & Tree, & fewer Bank Swallows. A single loon also flew over, at high elevation. In the woods there were mixed flocks of warblers, vireos, & Veery, often led by bands of Black-capped Chickadees &/or Tufted Titmice, as is typical for such flocks once feeding is established in a local woods area. In the NYC public parks, other birders report decent numbers although there is an indication that a lot of birds went over and made their way farther south. This Monday night, birds are on the move again throughout the northeast & beyond...
