Greetings! I went to Brooklyn today to search for the Mew (Common) Gull. I parked in the first lot SE of the Verrazano Bridge and walked toward Kohl's Department Store. At 11:45 I found the bird standing on the rocks opposite the end of B19 Street. It flew up onto the railing that lines the pedestrian walk, within six feet of me, after I tossed some bread in its direction. It remained there until a couple of pedestrians flushed it. It returned to the rocks but flew off towards the Verrazano a few minutes later.
I started walking back to my car and relocated the Mew Gull, standing on the pedestrian walkway, opposite the end of B16th Street with a group of Ring-bills. I took out some bread and the bird literally, on numerous occasions, came within 12 inches of my hand. Just as I was running out of bread it took off back towards B19th Street. That was at about 12:30. If you go bring plenty of bread! And bring your camera (I took about 100 photos). Peter Peter W.
