At 4:49 PM today, from the north end of the MetroNorth Riverdale station (Bronx), Rita and I watched an adult Bald Eagle gliding overhead south along the Hudson. It continued south until it disappeared out of 10x binocular range.
As we walked toward the station's exit, we encountered a young couple with a 10 year old son. I told them about our eagle sighting, which incited a lively conversation about raptors in general. As we were discussing Red-tailed Hawks with the enthusiastic youngster, one of that species appeared above the rise to the east of the station (a bit north of Wave Hill), kiting in the wind. All of us were delighted when the obliging hawk drifted relatively low over our heads and gave us a good show. We were even more delighted when (at 5:01 PM), the BE suddenly reappeared and passed quite near the hawk on its way north. That certainly made the kid's day and ours as well.
