This morning at 11:30, I spotted a Western Grebe off the small
fisherman's parking lot at the eastern end of Jacob Riis Park, Queens
County. I watched it until about 12:45 p.m. as it drifted west,
coming as close as about 350 yards from my position on the promenade.
When I left, it was just west of the parking lot. The coordinates of
the lot are 40.566804, -73.868777. This is presumably the same bird
that was seen here two weeks ago by Shane Blodgett, and on several
occasions off Coney Island.
I also had 2 Lapland Longspurs at Floyd Bennett Field, Kings County,
around 10:30 a.m. The birds were with a small group of horned larks,
in an area of plowed runway east of the Visitor's Center building
(coordinates 40.591896, -73.890436). One of the longspurs was in very
nice plumage.
