There are some nice puddles in a field along the west side of Dickersonville
Rd, ½ mile south of Youngstown-Wilson Road, in the Town of Porter. Today,
there were a few hundred CANADA GEESE there (there have been almost no large
groups of geese in Porter or Wilson this spring) plus one adult
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE. In addition, the RUDDY SHELDUCK that was discovered
here by David Mark a couple of weeks ago, was seen. Vicki Rothman and I
watched the Shelduck fly from here (a beautiful bird by the way, and
striking in flight) across the road to the pens where it was raised! Should
this cause anyone to question the identification of the White-fronted Goose
(due to its very loose association with a known escape), rest assured that
we noted the bird’s smaller size relative to the Canada Geese, the orange
bill and white “front” narrowly bordered by black, as well as the black
barring on the belly, orange legs, and white tail tip. The legs appeared to
be unbanded – but so were the Ruddy Shelduck’s…

There were also Green-winged Teal, Northern Pintail, American Wigeon, and
Mallards in the puddles here.

Good birding!
Willie
