Wednesday, 20 Feb., 2013 - Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City

A first, and second look at the reservoir in Central Park revealed that about
98% of the numbers of gulls present at mid-day yesterday were, as of mid-day
today, not present there - with merely 100 or so this late a.m., it was simple
enough to peruse each gull & determine that there was NOT a Black-headed, nor
an Iceland Gull amongst the usual 3 gull species of winter hereabouts
(Ring-billed, Herring, Great Black-backed). I also checked other parts of the
park which sometimes host roosting gulls (Meer, Lake, but not the Pond), and
was unable to see either of the 2 uncommon-rare gulls in any of these areas. A
modest number of Ring-billed Gulls were present in all. I also did not notice
a Common Merganser drake which had been at the Meer in recent weeks. The
feeders in the Ramble did again produce a Common Redpoll, along with the more
typical birds. A rather small increase in American Robin numbers, that may or
may not have anything to do with widespread northward movement, rather there
may be flocks still ranging about in search of decent old-fruits areas at which
to feed. There continue to be modest numbers of Red-winged Blackbirds and
Common Grackles about.

Good birding,
