I resisted the temptation to try the beach today as I noticed the winds
were not like yesterday and so it was back on the East Pond. There were
fewer shorebirds on the pond today than yesterday; my observation was
conducted during a rising tide and after. The AMERICAN AVOCET continued
late into the afternoon favoring various areas at the North End of the East
Pond.

There was one Pectoral Sandpiper loafing among the Black-belied Plovers and
let's hope this one sticks around for a bit as PECS have been rather scarce
this season. More juveniles should be coming through but I am still hoping
for one of those big days where something really exciting could potentially
drop in.

Ducks are coming as the number of Blue-winged Teals were up. With the West
Pond still out of commission it might not be a good year for waterfowl
viewing at Jamaica Bay.

I have posted a full report with today's shorebird
numbers<http://birdingdude.blogspot.com/2013/08/jamaica-bay-wildlife-refuge-east-pond.html>on
the blog along with a few photos.
