Highlights of reports received August 22 through August 29 from the Niagara Frontier Region include RED-NECKED PHALAROPES and warbler migrants. August 27 and 28, three RED-NECKED PHALAROPES at the Batavia Waste Water Plant, on Secondary Pond 1; the first pond after the railroad tunnel. Also, two BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS on the berm between ponds S1 and S2, plus SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SEMIPALM. SANDPIPER and LEAST SANDPIPER. Waterfowl at the plant included WOOD DUCK, AMERICAN BLACK DUCK, BLUE-WINGED TEAL, NORTHERN SHOVELER, GREEN-WINGED TEAL and RUDDY DUCK. The plant is on Industrial Blvd., off Route 33. Visitors must sign in at the office, and the gates close at 3 PM. Warbler migration is on the rise. 17 species at Amherst State Park this week, with EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, YELLOW-B. FLYCATCHER, LEAST FLYCATCHER, WARBLING VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO and a GREEN HERON. From the Niagara Peninsula of Ontario, warblers at the Wainfleet Bog - BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, CHESTNUT-S. WARBLER and BL. AND W. WARBLER. At Rock Point Provincial Park in Dunnville, shorebirds included SANDERLING, plus LONG-TAILED DUCK, 900 D.-CREST. CORMORANTS and a MERLIN. Nearby at the Mosaic Ponds - three SHORT-B. DOWITCHERS, and 8 CASPIAN TERNS. On Hutchins Road, north of Poth Road, 67 BLACK- BELLIED PLOVERS. In the Oak Orchard Wildlife Management Area, the evening of August 28, 6 SANDHILL CRANES and 183 GREAT EGRETS at Windmill Marsh. For the season, the PURPLE MARTIN monitoring program in the Iroquois Refuge and surrounding areas reported 289 fledged PURPLE MARTINS. Very few COMMON NIGHTHAWK reports this summmer - reports this week from Williamsville and Tonawanda. And, August 24, in the marsh on the west bank of Oak Orchard Creek at the Bridges in the Town of Carlton, a LEAST BITTERN and a reported, very rare, PURPLE GALLINULE.
