The CACKLING GOOSE is currently on Alley Pond (by the LIE- Cross Island interchange). If you're thinking of looking today, note that the lighting gets worse as the afternoon progresses.

I've posted the picture at my web site http://www.stevewalternature.com/ . It was not there early this morning, but geese come and go, as you all know. Regarding the Ash-throated flycatcher at Jones Beach last week, some debate arose of its actual identity. I was able to obtain comments from several folks out west. These are posted in an update to that page, accessible through a link in the Cackling Goose write up. It's a good lesson, in my opinion, of the difference in inexperienced observers trying to interpret field marks of vagrants from the literature versus having extensive experience in the field with such species. Finally, I have updated my recent work page with photos from the pelagic trip.
