Highlights of reports received January 23 through February 6 from the Niagara Frontier Region. February 6, an EASTERN TOWHEE at a feeder in Springville. The last week of January, a ROSS'S GOOSE among CANADA GEESE on the Welland Canal at Barber Drive, in Port Colbourne, Ontario. February 2, abundant waterfowl at the source of the Niagara River off Buffalo and Fort Erie, Ontario. Highlighted by a female KING EIDER, viewed from the Erie Basin Marina tower in Buffalo. The EIDER was among 14,000 GREATER SCAUP, 1800 BUFFLEHEAD and 1600 COMMON GOLDENEYE. Also, a SNOWY OWL off shore near Donnelly's Pier, RED-NECKED GREBE at the south end of the Bird Island Pier, and 4 GLAUCOUS GULLS. From the Ontario side of the river, off Old Fort Erie, RED- THROATED LOON and SURF SCOTER. At Nichols Marina, a first winter male KING EIDER continues with another SURF SCOTER. This EIDER has also been viewed from across the river, at the south end of Squaw Island in Buffalo. Along the New York side of the river from Squaw Island to Tonawanda - 7 GLAUCOUS GULLS, 5 ICELAND GULLS and 2 L. BLACK-B. GULLS. At the Mid-River Marina in Tonawanda - 82 LESSER SCAUP with single AMERICAN WIGEON, GREEN-WINGED TEAL and BELTED KINGFISHER. Among the upper river islands, 93 GREAT BLUE HERONS, 38 TUNDRA SWANS and 12 D.-CREST. CORMORANTS. January 31, Dunkirk Harbor's concentration of waterbirds was highlighted by an adult THAYER'S GULL, with 7 GLAUCOUS GULLS. Also in harbor - TUNDRA SWAN, RING-NECKED DUCK, 8 LESSER SCAUP, 2 SURF SCOTERS, 2 RUDDY DUCKS, PIED-BILLED GREBE and HORNED GREBE, plus PEREGRINE FALCON and 5 BALD EAGLES. Waterfowl on Lake Ontario recently included 20 SNOW GEESE off Sunset Beach in Carlton. Also LONG-TAILED DUCKS, WHITE- WINGED SCOTERS and SURF SCOTERS along the lakeshore. More SNOWY OWLS this week - 2 or 3 SNOWY OWLS with 3 ROUGH- LEGGED HAWKS around the Countryside Gravel Ponds on Route 62 in the Cattaraugus County Town of Dayton. Another SNOWY OWL with NORTHERN SHRIKE on Newell Road at the Dunkirk Airport in Chautauqua County. Other recent reports - in the fields of Niagara and Orleans Counties, small flocks of LAPLAND LONGSPURS, SNOW BUNTINGS and HORNED LARKS. A great count of 19 accipiter attacks this winter at a feeder in South Boston. Also GREAT HORNED OWL calling in South Boston. And, a pair of PILEATED WOODPECKERS continue at Lakeside Beach State Park, on Lake Ontario in Carlton. The Bird Report will be updated Thursday evening, February 13.
