We had a fabulous day with approx. 170 people attending throughout the day.
I want to thank Tom Burke, Gail Benson, Doug Gochfeld and Andrew Baksh for
their invaluable help as field leaders. They were really great.
Although the quantity of birds wasn't there we did have many Stilt
Sandpipers and Western Sandpipers up very close. There were a couple of
Black Terns and one Gull-billed Tern. Of course there were Semipalmated
Sandpipers and Plovers along with White-rumped Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper,
Pectoral Sandpiper, Short-billed Dowitcher and both Yellowlegs. Earlier in
the morning Andrew (Birding Dude) Baksh saw a Baird's which we couldn't
relocate.
We finished the day with a presentation given by Kevin Karlson. He gave a
very entertaining and informative look at his new book "Birding by
Impression" part of the Peterson series.
I want to publicly than the hard working people of Gateway National
Recreation Area especially Jen Nersesian. Also NYC Audubon and the American
Littoral Society for sponsoring the event.
